When the pandemic struck, causing numerous businesses to falter and suffer, there were a few sectors that not only survived but also thrived. Among these was the outdoor living industry.
My business, which specializes in mosaic designs and installations, was right in the middle of many of these changes, and I’ve witnessed how the industry has evolved in the past couple of years. For example, a Fortune Business Insights report said the global outdoor furniture market was valued at $48.4 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $72.8 billion by 2030. From my view, this substantial growth showcases the enduring demand for outdoor living solutions worldwide. Backyard swimming pool installations alone experienced a 20% surge between October 2019 and 2020, according to CAPE Analytics. Florida and California saw the highest increases.
Improving Outdoor Spaces During The Pandemic
The pandemic helped drive demand for outdoor living spaces. People were spending more time at home and started to value their outdoor spaces more. With travel restrictions and business closures, for many people, the backyard became a place for “staycations” and entertainment, so they began putting more money into their yards. I saw some even re-create a resort-like experience right in their own homes.
The 2021 Outdoor Living Report by Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens states that 82% of American homeowners are more interested in updating their outdoor living spaces compared to before the pandemic. The 2023 report (registration required), which surveyed 2,079 U.S. adults in November 2022, also found, “More than 3 in 5 American homeowners (63%) say they would prioritize investing in an outdoor living space.”
In South Florida, where my business is based, I’m finding that it’s becoming increasingly common to find backyards in which people have invested significant amounts of money. I find this trend is particularly noticeable in the Tampa and Orlando areas. Why is that? I believe it’s because, in my experience, Miami has more limited available land, which might make it challenging for some people to justify spending millions on a smaller lot. However, as you move north and west in Florida, you’ll often find more available land, which provides the opportunity to create truly extraordinary outdoor living.
Outdoor Trends
A Forbes contributor article, published in May, said the latest trends “go far beyond great grilling centers to creating true outdoor rooms.” Pizza ovens, fire pits, outdoor entertainment systems and games have become integral to enhancing the outdoor gathering experience. Many outdoor living areas also offer a blend of functionality and aesthetics, equipped with features like retractable bug screens, big-screen TVs and heating elements. The demand for exceptional outdoor spaces has also led to growing interest in greenhouses and conservatories as well.
I’ve also seen that alongside sculptures, waterfalls and thoughtful landscaping, clients are keen to bring more art into their outdoor spaces. I’ve worked with people who want to display mosaic art, for instance, in their swimming pool, a centerpiece of the backyard.
From my view, these trends are transforming outdoor living into a canvas for creativity and expression. Even though the pandemic is over, the love for beautiful outdoor spaces stays strong. I’ve observed that many contractors and builders have picked up these trends and are now offering turnkey projects with complex and unique outdoor spaces.
Lessons For Entrepreneurs
Whether you provide top-notch furniture, landscape design and lighting, pools or outdoor art, everyone can join in on the excitement. For those thinking about entering this industry, especially in Florida, it’s not too late. I believe the industry is just getting started, and there’s plenty of room for new entrepreneurs to get involved.
For artists, in particular, now could be a good time to consider outdoor living and how you could bring your art outside. Here are some tips that can apply to residential or commercial spaces:
1. Connect your work to the space. Success comes from aligning your art with the surroundings. It’s not just about creating pieces on paper that can be placed anywhere.
2. Harmonize with the setting. Outdoor art should blend with the design, colors and even the plants of the space.
3. Mind the style. Be careful when choosing art, such as sculptures, for historical locations. Sometimes, modern pieces might not complement a building’s traditional style.
4. Embrace nature’s palette. Incorporate natural elements like stones, wood or plants into your outdoor artwork to create a harmonious connection with the environment.
5. Consider weather resistance. This is key. Ensure your outdoor art is made from durable materials that can withstand the elements. This will ensure longevity and maintain its visual appeal.
6. Build connections with experts. This might include architects, pool builders and landscape designers. Once you establish relationships with people from outdoor living industry, they will be your sales team. If they like your art, they’re more likely to want you to be involved in their future projects.
In the end, the pandemic transformed plain outdoor spaces into fantastic retreats. They’re not just places to be outside; they’re places to dream, relax and have fun. I believe entrepreneurs need to recognize that making outdoor areas special isn’t just a fad; it’s a new way of life.
