My work life hasn’t been without its share of bumps since I arrived in the United States as a Mexican immigrant. But through determination and the strategic use of technology, I’ve managed to establish myself as a leader in my industry. Today, I want to share with you how to use tech to expand your leadership role within your current organization.
Develop your communication skills.
Effective communication is key to building trust and credibility within your organization. As a leader, you need to be able to articulate your vision, share your ideas and listen to feedback from your team members. Invest in improving your communication skills through courses, workshops or even mentorship from more experienced leaders. This will help you connect with your team, foster collaboration and create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
One thing I do is always try to use the least amount of words necessary to get my point across. When you write an email, for example, read it a few times before hitting send and try to condense your message further. Engaging in this routine can make your communications more effective.
Foster innovation.
In previous companies I’ve collaborated with, I’ve seen leaders suppress innovation by dismissing new ideas from other team members. Unfortunately, this is a common practice that often takes place because big companies usually have a hard time adapting to change. A true leader, however, recognizes the importance of nurturing a culture of innovation within the organization.
Encourage your team members to explore new ideas, take risks and learn from failure. Provide them with the resources and support they need to experiment, collaborate and push boundaries. Celebrate their successes and acknowledge their efforts, even if the results aren’t exactly what was expected. By doing so, you’ll create an environment where innovation thrives and your team feels empowered to contribute to the company’s success.
One way technology can facilitate innovation is by using collaborative brainstorming platforms. At my company, we hold a virtual ideation session using Lean Coffee Table, where team members can submit their ideas on digital sticky notes and vote on which ideas to discuss and implement further. This levels the playing field for everyone, regardless of their position or seniority, and has led to the generation of several groundbreaking concepts we implemented in our projects.
Streamline processes.
Not using the right technology tools is comparable to wanting to run your business with Post-its. As a leader, it’s essential to look for ways to improve efficiency and productivity within your organization. Harness the power of technology to streamline processes, automate repetitive tasks and optimize workflows.
For example, project management tools can help you track progress and allocate resources more effectively, while collaboration platforms can enhance communication and teamwork. By embracing these digital solutions, you’ll position yourself as a forward-thinking leader who’s committed to driving growth and success.
Promote diversity and inclusion.
I grew up in a city where many businesses were predominantly led by individuals from homogeneous backgrounds, and this lack of diversity often hindered the potential for innovation. I experienced this first-hand. Believe me, diversity and inclusion are more than just buzzwords—they’re vital components of a successful organization.
As a leader, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your workplace is welcoming and supportive of individuals from all backgrounds. By promoting diversity and inclusion, you’ll not only create a more innovative and resilient team but also demonstrate your commitment to social responsibility and ethical leadership.
Our company, for example, has used technology to embrace flexible working arrangements, such as remote work and flexible hours, to accommodate employees with different needs and lifestyles. By providing this level of flexibility, we’ve been able to attract and retain a diverse workforce, including individuals with caregiving responsibilities, with disabilities or who live in different time zones. This approach has created a more inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives and experiences, ultimately contributing to our organization’s success and, more importantly, employee satisfaction and retention.
In conclusion, remember that actions speak louder than words. Demonstrate your commitment to leveraging technology and innovation by actively implementing these strategies within your own role. Share your knowledge and insights with your team, and be open to learning from them as well. Inspire those around you to follow in your footsteps and contribute to the company’s success. You can become an invaluable asset to your company and motivate your staff to greater heights by putting these tactics into practice and leading by example.
