Running a successful business is the dream of every entrepreneur. But, even if you’re fueled with passion, starting a business is hard, and keeping it thriving is even harder. From my experience as the founder of Starbright Floral Design, I have learned that success is not guaranteed. Navigating uncertainties that include a global pandemic, financial crises and the devastation of 9/11 requires continuous effort, dedication and certain qualities that set apart a successful enterprise. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned on how to keep a successful business going.

Stay true to your dream.

As an entrepreneur, you start with a dream or an idea you believe in. This dream is the driving force behind your enterprise. It defines your values, vision and mission. To keep a successful business going, you must remain true to your founding principles. These principles are the foundation of your enterprise and the reason your customers believe in you. They set you apart from competitors and give you a unique selling proposition.

At Starbright Floral Design, we are committed to providing all customers of our business with top customer service and floral arrangements with a smile. When I founded the company in 1994, my vision was to create a brand that stands for quality, reliability and customer satisfaction. Over the years, this vision has remained unchanged, and we consider it one of the main reasons for our continued success in the industry.

Be passionate and committed to success.

Passion ignites every great endeavor. This is why entrepreneurs need to be committed and passionate in chasing this success. Without passion, it’s easy to give up when things get tough. On the other hand, a clear, unifying vision that the entire team understands can help a company navigate challenging times. Leaders need to be role models to keep their teams motivated and committed. This passion is contagious, and when your team sees how much you believe in your business, they are more likely to follow your lead.

Remain focused on your goals.

A successful business requires you to remain resilient to failures, setbacks and other challenges. When these times of challenge occur, it is essential to never lose sight of your goals. They are the roadmap that keeps you focused and on track. When facing business challenges it is easy to get sidetracked and lose focus. When you truly believe in what you’re doing, these goals will always remain aligned with the actions you take.

Stay adaptable during times of change.

With any dynamic market, customer needs are constantly changing. Successful businesses need to remain adaptable by:

• Keeping up with trends.

• Changing strategies when necessary.

• Identifying evolving customer needs.

Successful entrepreneurs can anticipate these changes and adjust during changing times, and it often is beneficial for businesses to take calculated risks to improve their organization. But, before taking these risks, it is imperative to evaluate the potential outcomes and weigh the risks and the rewards before taking action. Taking calculated risks is what separates successful entrepreneurs from those who fail.

Have persistence and tenacity.

Achieving business success requires tenacity and persistence during inevitable challenges. Successful entrepreneurs never give up when business gets tough, and they learn from their mistakes and use them as stepping stones to reach their goals. If one approach to solving a problem doesn’t work, don’t give up. Take a look at the problem from a different angle to identify potential solutions that make the business stronger.

Showcase strong leadership skills.

Strong leaders are required to keep a successful business going, and, as an entrepreneur, you need to be the person your team wants to follow. Inspire, motivate and give your team direction by sharing your vision and building trust in your organization. Passionate leadership teams are able to lead by example and share the company’s vision when building relationships with customers and employees.

Just because a business owner has a great idea and starts off doing well, success is not guaranteed forever. Maintaining a successful business requires passion, focus and a strategic approach. At Starbright Floral Design, we have embraced these principles and seen success as a result. We remain focused on our goals, take calculated risks when needed and have strong leadership in place. Ultimately, this has enabled us to grow into a thriving enterprise that has name recognition in a highly competitive and very saturated market.
